Furry Warmth

A lot of my friends wear Ugg boots.  I really like them, but they’re so expensive.  Is there anything similar I could buy at a more affordable price?  And Where can I find them? ~ Budgeting

Eve Roth Lindsay:

Ugg boots are a really versatile boot for the colder winter months.  Made from genuine sheepskin, they’ll keep your feet toasty all winter.  But you’re right, they are pretty expensive.  Luckily, Hong Kong has plenty of cheaper imitations.  Whether you want to stick to the original style made famous by Ugg Australia, or choose a pair covered in tassels, laces, ribbons, or even faux fur, Hong Kong is sure to have it.  Head to Argyle Plaza (Mong Kok MTR exit D2), which is filled with boots inspired by Uggs, in both the classic and not-so-classic styles.

Colour Query

What colours are in this Christmas?  I’m trying to choose a dress for my family’s Christmas party.  ~ Party Girl

Eve Roth Lindsay:

This season, part colours are soft, romantic shades such as rose red, teal, and rich purple.  Luckily, these look great on everyone.  Christmas is the perfect time to dress up, and this year there are a number of trends that make dressing up especially glamorous.  Beautiful, rich-textured fabrics such as velvet and satin are hot again.  A royal purple dress in one of these fabrics will make you the belle of the ball.  If you want something really special, head to Sparkle (Shop 702B, 7/F Pedder Building, 12 Pedder Street, Central) for a dress that will set you apart from the rest of the Christmas crowd.

Get it covered

Animal prints seem to be this season’s hot trend, but how can you mix and match them without turning into a safari monster?

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Animal prints are in fashion for a good reason – they’re fierce! Animal prints have taken over the runways this season with bold statement jackets, blouses, and even shoes. If you want to channel your inner animal, try wearing a dress in a simple colour like brown or black and pair it with leopard prints heels or ballerina flats. Wearing simple styles with colourful animal prints for an 80s vibe- think hot pink or royal blue zebra stripes mixed with black also looks amazing, as long as anything else you wear is one solid colour. The head-to-toe animal look is definitely not what this season’s look is all about. The key is to choose your statement animal piece and wear other styles to complement it. To get the look, head over to shoppers’ paradise, argyle centre in Mong Kok (exit D2 Mong Kok MTR). You’ll find animal prints on everything. From scarves and belts to shirts. If you’re truly trying to take a walk on the wild side, try a pair of animal print leggings.

The white stuff

I love white outfits, but I’m not especially slim. How can I pull them off? - Snow queen

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

White can look fabulous, regardless of your size. The best place to wear it is your upper body White shirts are timeless, and an especially hot look for autumn 2009. Luckily, it’s a versatile look, and there’s a stellar style for every shape. The key to choosing the perfect sleeve length is to make sure the sleeve doesn’t end on the widest point of your arm. Another top tip is to make sure the shirt is fitted. It should accentuate your waist – overly baggy styles will only make you look heavier. Strategically placed ruffles and pleats make the classic white shirt look fresh and modern. Keep all the details of the shirt near your face, keep the shirt body simple and you will actually look slimmer.

Fair Enough

Can Asians wear beige? How can we wear it? - Fade Out

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Beige can be a tricky colour to wear if you have black hair and a skin tone that is in the fawn-to-tan spectrum. It’s especially difficult to wear close to your face, as it can make you appear washed out, and yet it’s a popular colour for bridesmaids and nudes are still making waves in the fashion world. Wearing deeper beiges will instantly make it work. You can also try wearing it only yon your bottom half and wear a striking colour that flatters your complexion on top. To find out more about what colours look best on you, you can log onto www.savvystyle.com and book a colour consultation. A teen Mini colour consultation is a great way to learn all about the most flattering colours for your colouring and how to wear them with confidence and style.

Dangling dilemma

I’ve always had trouble matching my necklaces with my outfit. Should long necklaces only be worn with lower-cut shirts? - Necklace Newbie

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Bold statement necklaces are the biggest news in jewellery this season. Show-stopping accessories look amazing with open neck tops and v-neck t-shirts, but you can also wear them with higher necklines. A good way to try out this trend is to pair a chunky necklace with a simple tee and cardigan or muted jacket. This way you can experiment with bold colours and funky styles. Pears, beads, ribbon and fabrics are all fashionable materials this season, and you can wear them with everything from a basic tee to a flirty dress. Instant chic.

Playing dress-up

I’m going for a job interview soon for a part-time office job. What should I wear? I’m only 17 and I don’t want to dress like a 27-year-old office lady. But I also want to make sure I make a good impression! - Ms Formal

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Pretty, classic styles are a big thing for autumn, so follow this theme for your job interview. Try a cute argyle cardigan over a simple T-shirt and slim trousers. Another great option is a flared skirt that hits just above your knee. It’s a great length for work, but the flared style keeps it youthful. Keep your hair tidy and your make-up natural. Don’t overdress or wear anything too trendy. It’s crucial to avoid wearing anything that you’re not comfortable in – try out your outfits at home before the interview. The most important thing to remember is to be yourself, be confident and smile – a smile is really the best thing to wear. Good luck!

Back to the Future

We’re going to have an 80”s party. How can I get a stylish 80’s look without spending too much? I don’t want to shop for the whole outfit, because I think it will cost too much. - Retro Chick

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Wow, are you in luck! Fashion from the 80’s is one of the hottest trends for winter so the shops are packed full of 80’s styles. The 80’s look was wild with lots of bold accessories, making it perfect for your party without you blowing your budget. Bangles were a big hit back then, so buy lots- particularly neon plastic ones- and wear several on each arm. If you are looking for something more edgy, be daring in fingerless gloves or try legwarmers with a cute skirt. Check out H&M or look on Pottinger Street in Central to find all the accessories you need in one spot. Just make sure you are wearing lots of bright colours and you’ll rock that party.

To get ahead

What kind of hats suit people who don’t have very defined facial features, especially flat noses? - Hattie

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

A cute hat will draw lots of attention, and is a great way to minimize certain features or disguise a bad hair day. With your features, the higher the hat, the better. The fedora, which is usually made of felt, has a curled brim and a ribbon around the base. Feminine styles may include a flower, bow or printed ribbon. The more masculine styles are great with the menswear look that’s so hot this season. As the weather cools down, try out wool berets and wear them at a jaunty angle, or look for the really high berets like the Burberry Prorsum knitted hat. Choosing a colour that suits you is also important. Bright jewel tones are big this season; purple suits almost everyone. The best way to decide what’s right is to experiment. Choose a shopping buddy who’s not afraid to give you an honest opinion!

Get it Nailed

Dark nail colours seem a bit mature to me, but a lot of people my age can carry it off.  How can I wear it and look chic and trendy?

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Black nail polish is tricky to wear, so why not try a dark purple or burgundy instead?  The other hot dark colours for autumn are navy, teep turquoise, and bronze.  These colours are still dark and edgy, plus they look great on most skin tones.  Matte polish is best with these colours.  It’s important with dark polish to keep nails shorter – long nails only suit light, medium, or natural shades.  If you’re worried about looking too mature, wear a preppy outfit or contrast your manicure with a feminine outfit.  Great options include simple jeans, a tee and pretty makeup, or a floral skirt, tank top and a delicate piece of jewellery.  Remember: dark nails are easier to pull of with a bit of attitude, so hold your head high and be confident!

Good morning, sunshine

My favorite colour is yellow, but it seems a difficult colour to wear. Any advice on how to make it work? - Ray

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Yellow can be tricky to wear so it’s very important to make sure you pick the right shade. It’s a great colour for summer, so while the heat’s still beating down, you should give it a go. The key is to find the right shade for your skin, eye and hair colour. If you have dark or very tanned skin, you can probably pull off bright, vibrant shades of yellow. Try a bold yellow top with white shorts to highlight your colouring. Most people with paler complexions look best in paler shades of yellow, such as sherbet or primrose. If you really want to know the best colour to wear, visit www.colourmebeautiful.hk and have a colour analysis. You will learn what looks best plus you’ll get a swatch wallet full of your best colours. If you can’t wait to try this sunny shade, or are worried the sunny colour won’t suit you, wear yellow accessories, such as bold ballet flats, a statement handbag or neon yellow jewellery to add punch to your wardrobe.

Long leg tricks

I’m tall but I have a long waist and quite short legs. What should I wear to look more balanced? - Stretch

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

A great way to balance a long torso is by going for cinched waist styles. By pulling tops or dresses in at the waist, you’ll break up your upper body and give the appearance of longer legs. Try ruffled tops with wide belts around the smallest part of your waist for a feminine look. Pair this with shorts for daytime or jeans in the evening to pull the look together. Remember, high0cut styles are the best for your shape low rise trousers will only shorten your legs. Heels also help lengthen your legs if you want a more sophisticated look.

Riviera chic

I’m going to a boat party soon – what would you recommend as “cruise wear”? I can’t afford expensive brands, but I want to look cool. - Aqua girl

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

For a boat party, the key is to be cool but comfortable. A maxi dress screams casual chic but won’t leave you hot or look too overdone. A solid colour is very flattering, while colour block and tie-dye styles are big trends at the moment. You can find cheaper maxi-dresses in lots of stores this year, especially in the after-summer sales. Go to H&M or Mango for colourful styles and fun prints, or head to Zara if you want something more classic. Pair your maxi-dress with sandals and a pair of sunglasses and you’re set.

August 23, 2009

Casual look

I wear T-shirts and jeans every day, but it’s getting boring. Are there any other ways to dress casually? - Trendy

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

A pair of tailored shorts is a great alternative to jeans this summer, paired with a cute T-shirt or layered tank tops. Try a nautical theme – a big trend this season. Shorts with vertical stripes are very flattering, lengthening your legs. Paired with a star print tee and a pair of sunglasses with coloured rims, and you’ve got a great wardrobe update! Dresses are another great way to mix up what you wear every day. Not only are dresses an easy one-stop outfit, they can also be worn with lots of different accessories so you can keep changing your look. Try a cute floral dress this summer or a stylish maxi dress with casual sandals.

Bikini nerves

My friends and I are planning to go to the beach once the weather gets better. I want to wear a bikini, but I’ve never worn one before. I don’t have a tummy, but my limbs, especially my legs, are quite thick. What style should I go for? If I want to cover up, what should I wear? - Beached

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

With your flat tummy, you have the perfect body for a bikini. Choose a top with lots of detail: patterns, prints, ruffles, buttons, ruching, gathering or anything that draws the eye away from your legs. Keep away from boy shorts and go for a high cut leg to make your pins appear slimmer – a solid colour is best, so mix and match the top and bottom. The hottest cover-ups are maxi-dresses and kaftans. Head to Mandarin Orange (www.mandarinorangeclothing.com, 2525 8275) for your cover-ups conveniently, swimsuit store Ozzie Cozzie Co (www.ozziecozzieco.com, 2810 1356) is in the same building: 3/F, Grand Progress Building, 15-16 Lan Kwai Fong.

August 9, 2009

Playing dress-up

I’m going on a cruise this summer and there will be a formal dinner. I’m only 13 but quite tall. I don’t know what to wear: should I be looking for a short and stylish dress, or something long and mature? And where can I find it? - Just cruisin’

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

The perfect solution is young and fun with a shorter hemline. Leave super-mini dress aside and try something that hits a few centimetres above the knee. Tall girls look great in A-line cuts that show off long legs, while funky embellishments or a print can keep the dress looking youthful and fresh. Head over to French Connection for cute prints, Zara for more sophisticated solid colour dresses or H&M for a range of looks at affordable prices. Don’t forget to find cute shoes and a bag to complete your outfit.

August 2, 2009

Dress dilemma

I’ve got a party coming up in a few weeks. Where can I find a dress that isn’t too expensive? - Party hearty

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Choosing the perfect dress can be difficult, but don’t worry, there’s a perfect frock for everyone! Head to the fourth and sixth floors of the Peddder Building, Central, and browse the racks. There are some hidden gems for less than HK$1,000 and most of these stores offer alterations free of change. You could also try Hong Kong Industrial Centre in Lai Chi Kok. Alternatively, you could have your dress designed for you. Look through magazines and online to find styles you like. Visit www.savvystyle.com the team will help you create the dress of your dreams for HK$3,000. You can also head to Shenzhen for very cheap prices, or find a tailor in Tsim Sha Tsui or Mong Kok where prices are still reasonable.

July 26, 2009

The High Life

I know high heels make you look more feminine, but they also tire out the feet and legs. Is there a solution?

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Looking good doesn’t have to be a matter of “no pain no gain”. Stilettos can be painful, so it’s good news that chunkier heels and wedges are super stylish this summer. The thicker the heel, the more comfortable the shoe, so invest in a pair of cork wedges or a platform heel. Try Aerosoles (22426690) for super comfortable shoes that you can walk in all day. You can also buy special soft insoles to help cushion your feet when you’re walking around. Go to www.queenbee.com.hk and buy some Killer Kushionz which are almost guaranteed to make your feet feel better. Pop them in your handbag before you leave the house, just in case you need relief.

July 19, 2009

Fashion for the hippy

I’m not very tall but quite plump. I’m not worried about my size – I’m happy as I am – but I do struggle to buy trendy clothes. I know other girls with the same problem. All the pretty dresses seem to be made for skinny Minnies. Where can I find stylish clothes that will fit?

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Girls lucky enough to have curves should create an hourglass silhouette by choosing styles that draw in at the waist and skim over hips. V-neck tops and waist-cinching belts are both perfect for your figure. Go for solid colours instead of prints, and try a flared, Knee-length skirt of a pair of shorts that hit mid thigh to show off great calves. Vertical stripes are great for looking slimmer and softer fabrics always work better. For a cool and casual look, go to www.rosarini.com or call 25226-1036 for a top-to-toe wardrobe. H&M carries up to a UK size 14 and for beach chic, head to Quicksilver where curvy girls are well catered for.

July 12, 2009

The long and short of it

I have quite chubby thighs. Now summer is here, I would love to wear short shorts. How can I make my legs look slimmer? - Pins out

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Shorts are a great option for curvy girls. Make sure that your shorts don’t end at the widest part of your thighs, as this will make your legs look bigger. Instead, opt for shorts that hit a slimmer part of your leg for a more streamlined look. Wherever you end your shorts is where everyone is going to look, so checking they end in a flattering place is essential. Vertical stripes can help to elongate the leg, or go for darker colours, like black or navy to look more streamlined. Match fairly basic shorts with trendy pieces on top, allowing you to show off great arms or shoulders. A one-shouldered top, cute vintage tee or even a floral headband will draw attention up and away from your legs and help you make a fashion splash this summer.

June 28, 2009

Legs on show

Now its summer, it’s far too hot to wear jeans. But I don’t always like to wear shorts or a skirt? What other options are there? - Got it covered

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Coloured leggings are a great way to inject some fun into your summer wardrobe, especially paired with long T-shirts. For great basic or printed long tees, head to H&M, Giordano or Uniqlo – they stock a range of necklines and colours at great prices. For basic leggings, try Pottinger Street; for more exciting patterns and colours, try Island Beverley, stalls around Causeway Place, Granville Road in Tsim Sha Tsui and Argyle Centre in Mong Kok. Pair your tee and leggings with flip flops, bejewelled sandals or nautical wedges and you’re good to go.

June 21, 2009

Summer eyes

I don’t have a very defined nose but I really want a pair of trendy shades. What shape would look best on me? - In the shade

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Shades are much needed in the Hong Kong summer sun, so it’s a good idea to have some fun with them. Wayfarer and aviator style are still in, but are updated with pastel or brightly coloured rims. Embellished sunglasses are also very trendy this season and are a perfect way to add sparkle to an outfit. If you have a shorter nose, its best to look for shades where the bridge sits higher so that more of the length of your nose is seen when you wear them. You should also take into account your face shape – oval or rounded style fit square faces best; wider shades suit rectangular faces; rectangular frames suit round faces; and if you have an oval face shape, anything goes.

June 14, 2009

Forever young

I’m 18 but I look older. My cousin’s wedding is coming up and I don’t know what to wear – I really don’t want to go for the mature evening gown look. I’d really like to look my age! My mum suggested I wear a black dress, but I’m worried it will make me look mature, too. Help! - Dressed down

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Weddings are a great way to challenge your creativity and let your own style and personality still shine through in formalwear. A little black dress is a staple for anyone’s closet whether you’re 18 or 50, but first make sure that black is appropriate for the wedding. To avoid looking too mature look for interesting cuts and details – ruffles, pleats, unusual necklines, and beading, appliqué or lace panels. There are plenty of ways to jazz up an outfit and keep you looking young and fun. Consider bejewelled heels or metallic strappy platform sandals with a dress in a classic colour and cut. You can also accessories with a funky clutch, some crystal or beaded bracelets and top it all o ff with a ribbon hair band.

June 07, 2009

Truck on

I love wearing a trucker’s on holidays. I want to customize one for the summer: where can I get the materials to DIY it? - Homemade hatter

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Customizing your own clothes and accessories is a fun and inexpensive way to update your wardrobe and own one-of-a-kind pieces. Bowring street in Jordan has plenty of fabric and haberdashery shops which sell cloth, lace, ribbon and other trimmings which you can use to decorate your trucker hat, or try Spotlight (tel: 2359 0010) in Megabox. If you want a print or drawing on your hat, Chung Nam (tel: 2384 2430, www.yp.com.hk/chungnamhk/index.html) in Mong Kok is a great place to stock up on fabric paint and other arts and crafts materials. Let your imagination go wild. Dazzle family and friends. And enjoy your holiday!

Skirt the issue

I’m quite short and my legs aren’t particularly skinny, but I’d love to wear skirts now summer is here. I just don’t know how to match them with shoes to make my legs look longer. I love wearing flip flops, but they make my legs look even shorter and squatter than they are. Help! - Short ‘n’ sweet

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Skirts are a great way to look cute and keep cool throughout summer. If you’re petite, the best skirt length is above your knees, so this season’s miniskirt trends are perfect for you. Tiered, pleated and ruffled miniskirts are everywhere, but remember to match them with a fitted top so that the volume won’t overwhelm you. Avoid skirts which end mid-calf if you “clutter” your leg area, you will cut off the length of your legs. Pair your skirt with a pair of platform sandals or wedges to lengthen and tone your legs and give an illusion of longer, slimmer pins. Another tip is to wear nude – coloured heels – it’s all the rage with Hollywood celebrities and lengthens your legs even more. You can also match your shoe colour to your outfit, or just to the colour of your skirt hem (e.g. Light-coloured shoes with a light coloured hem) to give the appearance of extra height. Everybody is built differently and the key to looking fabulous is to highlight your best features.

May 24, 2009

Want wellies

I want to get a pair of rain boots, but I’m quite short. Floral prints seem to make my legs look short and fat. What colour should I pick to avoid this? - Singing in the rain

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Wellies aren’t just to keep your dry in the rain – they are definitely fashionable and fun, too. Solid coloured rain boots will make your legs look longer, especially if you match them to the colour of your skirt or trousers. Another option is to wear dark jeans tucked into navy rain boots. You can also pair them with tights to elongate your legs. Look carefully at the cut of the boots; some are wider than others. Ones with a smaller opening are more flattering. For trendy and well-priced rain boots, go to Gala Place in Mong Kok, where you can find boutiques offering fun styles. Seibu (Tel: 3514 9268) and Sogo (Tel: 2833 8338) are also good for discovering Japanese brand rain boots for smaller sizes. Also check out http://awesomerainboots.com which delivers a more upscale range of wellies to Hong Kong – I love the plain, high-quality Hunter boots from the UK. Really, there’s no need to splash out when you want to splash in puddles!

May 10, 2009

In Style

What style jeans are in fashion this summer? I’ve seen more people wearing flares than skinny jeans, and most of them seem to be in lighter colours. - Jeanius

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Although wide cuts are making a comeback, slim-leg jeans are still very much the rage this season, with flares coming in next. Colours for the summer include delicious pastels and beautiful brights. Light washes are also in this season, so look for pale grey and indigo washes in expected stores like Mango and Uniqlo, but also check out Bread & Butter and Diesel. Denim shorts are also hot going for light washes from Bauhaus, guess Jeans, Chevignon and Replay. Pair with a tee or tank and stylish sandals, throw a scarf around your neck and you’re ready for summer.

May 3, 2009

Shirt search

I really like those long, plain tank tops that match with everything. I got mine in the US and it seems quite hard to find them in Hong Kong. Where can I get them cheaply? - Tanked

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Long tank tops are great for hot weather and they match with so many items! H&M, Zara, Esprit and Bossini stock a wide range of long tank tops at great prices, and they come ribbed or plain. Bold, bright colours are trendy this season, so look out for pink, blue, yellow, green and even fluorescents. They look amazing layered, too. Pair them with leggings and flip flops or sandals for an effortlessly cool daytime look, or match them with jeans and platform heels at night.

April 26, 2009

Summer soles

Flip flop season is on its way. I want to get a pair for the summer, but I don’t have particularly long, skinny legs so I can look a big squat. How can I make my legs look slimmer and longer? - Stretch

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Summer is the perfect time to show off your legs, and if you’re not naturally built like Gisele, wedge platform heels are very popular this season they’ll lengthen and tone your legs, making you look taller and slimmer. Fierce, Nine West, Millie’s, Aerosoles, and Joy and Peace have a great selection. One of my favourite designs is the nautical-style rope platforms. Platforms look fabulous with similar colored trousers or leggings ending at your ankles and this will elongate your legs. Have fun finding a pair that make you look and feel great!

April 19, 2009

Bargain hunt

Where can I get affordable yet trendy sunglasses for the summer? - Shady Lady

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Sunglasses are fun and inexpensive way to update your summer wardrobe and make you stand out, even when you’re not at the beach! You can find many affordable yet trendy styles along Granville Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, Ladies Market in Mong Kok, and Li Yuen Streets East and West in Central. Mango, Esprit and H&M also have great eyewear for the season and offer great quality and style. Keep a look out for embellished and pastel or brightly colored frames, which are hot looks this summer. Always make sure your sunglasses offer 100 percent UV protection usually shades will be labeled with a sticker in the corner, but if you’re not sure, ask!

March 29, 2009

Kept back

I want to get a hair band. I have quite a round face and straight, long hair. I don’t know whether to get a thick or a thin one to go with my usual outfit of T-shirt and jeans. - Brandy Betty

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Long hair suits thicker bands, so avoid skinny headbands that will make your face look rounder. Instead, choose a scarf-like or more sporty headband. If you choose one in colours that are close to your hair colour, it will be more flattering. If your hair is dark, go for deep or bright colours. If you have light hair, look for lighter, softer colours. You could also try some of these year’s hottest trends by wearing a band with a bow, or one adorned with feathers to brighten up a classic outfit of jeans and a T-shirt. If you’re worried about pulling all of your hair off your face, leave some wisps to beautifully frame your face.

March 22, 2009

Old-school charm

Do you know where I can get a wide variety of vintage goods? - Fashion Queen

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Vintage clothing is a really hot trend right now, from skinny leg jeans and plaid shirts to 1950s prom dresses. Look carefully at what you buy, though as some stores offer new clothes that only look vintage., For real vintage clothes, start by checking out Me & George, either in the Central lanes (Li Yuen St) or in Mong Kok (64, Tung Choi Street) where you’ll find a great collection of vintage goods starting from just K$20 Then head over to Fatto Amano in Tin Hau (Tsing Fung Street, 2881 7153) for American T-shirts and casual gear from the 1970s. Goods here range from HK$80-HK$1,500, so you’ll need to dig to find the best bargains.

March 15, 2009

Looking for length

I always have trouble finding jeans that are long enough for me- I’m 5’10” and most pairs are just too short. Where can I find jeans to fit? – Leggy Ann

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Tall girls can really struggle to buy jeans long enough in Hong Kong, but there are stores that sell them nice and long. Head to new Australian shop Cotton On (D’Aguilar St, Central, 2537 4279; branches also in Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok) which sells skinny jeans perfect for taller girls. Zara also stocks styles that will fit. If you have a bit more cash to spend, Calvin Klein Jeans (2295 3016) models have a standard 34-inch inseam. Another option is to wear flats and rock this year’s cropped skinnies trend- they should hit just above the ankles.

March 8, 2009

Loosen up

I recently bought a pair of loose fitting “boyfriend” jeans. I generally wear fitted and flared styles, so I’m not sure what sort of tops to wear with my new pair. Help! - Baggy Doll

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Nice choice boyfriend jeans are set to be a big trend again for spring 2009 so swap skinny for slack this season. The key to pulling off this trend is to choose fitted tops to contrast with the bagginess of the jeans. Go for basic tanks or tees, or try a button up shirt. And don’t forget to cuff the hems of your jeans and show off casual flip flops, cute ballet flats or stylish sandals.

March 1, 2009

What a pair!

I need to wear glasses, but I want to buy some cool sunglasses. As contacts hurt my eyes, I want to invest in a prescription pair that will last. Any suggestions? - In the Shade

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Don’t worry - there is a perfect pair of shades for everyone. Tie your hair back and take a look at your face shape first. If it’s square, go for oval glasses to soften your look. If you have a round face, try more rectangular frames to balance your features. Those with rectangular faces should stay away from angular shades and opt for wider styles with curved edges. Ovals suit most shapes. Don’t forget frames come in a rainbow of colours, so get experimenting.

Party days

I have to attend a wedding soon but I don’t have a dress or a pair of heels. And I have no idea where to get them. Where would you recommend going for dresses which are formal yet still youthful and chic? And what magazines can I read for beauty and fashion ideas? - Frockless

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

For the latest trends, head to H&M where you’ll be able to find a smart, chic dresses and heels without spending a fortune. At the moment, they have a range of cute black dresses that will be suitable for a formal occasion but are still fun. Or browse the shelves and choose from full A-line frocks or one-shoulder styles that you can accessorise with a coloured or bejewelled cardigan. Go through magazines like Seventeen or Teen Vogue to read up on the latest trends and beauty secrets to inspire you each month.

Problem Pins

I’ve had scars on my legs for years now. I’ve tried everything, but they’re still there. I’m tired of wearing jeans all the time and looking boring. How can I get a different, cool look without revealing my legs? - Over Jeans

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

You can keep your legs looking good and be oh-so-trendy at the same time. Opaque tights are the answer: they is a staggering choice of colours and patterns this season. You can find everything from zebra prints to lacy looks – and they look amazing with mini denim skirts, so you can give your jeans a break. Another hot look is the 7/8-length trouser. It’s just a little bit shorter than a regular trouser and will look really cool with the hot boots available in the stores right now. There’s a lot to wear besides jeans, so head out to the shops now!

Get it framed

I don’t need glasses but I’d love a pair of thick plastic square frames as an accessory.  But I have a flat nose, and they don’t seem to fit or suit me. Should I try a different style? - Four-eye wannabe

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Glasses can completely transform your look and add glamour and fun to your wardrobe.  You don’t want them to draw attention to your nose-the best way to avoid that is to choose a pair with details on the arms or outside edges of the glasses.  Choose frames with nose pads so you can stop them from sliding down. If your face shape is long or narrow, choose a colour that contrasts with your skin tone.  If you have a round or square face, go for a colour that blends in with your skin. A light-coloured bridge will lengthen your nose and make it appear less flat. If your face is oval shape, anything goes!

Good morning, sunshine

My favorite colour is yellow, but it seems a difficult colour to wear. Any advice on how to make it work?

Ray
