Choose fabrics that breathe such as cotton, linen and other natural fibers. Make sure that the fabric is lightweight and does not cling to the body, allowing your skin to breathe. Certain fabrics can trap heat and increase sweat so avoid fabrics such as nylon and polyester. The “look” for Spring/Summer 2010 is all about floaty and light, with some of the hottest items made from natural, gauzy fabrics. This is great news, as it means you can look fashionable and cool off at the same time. Summer Style There are four key trends this summer so take your pick! 1. LIGHT AND FRESH A dressed down look with soft water colors and neutrals. Fabrics are light and airy with loose silhouettes. 2. LEISURE CLASS This trend is all about casual classics with nautical or athletic details. Cotton is key with checks, stripes bright colours mixed with white, black and navy. 3. LOOSE AND FREE The anti-establishment trend: 1960’s influence and denim washes. 4. LAID BACK ATTITUDE Vacation attire with a tropical island look. Pucker, crinkle, pebble, waffle and herringbone are important textures with lightweight fabrics and prints inspired by Polynesian islands, flowers and Asia. Sticking with the trend, keep it light and loose. Maxi dresses are so in for the summer and make the perfect outfit for scorching weather. If you’re not quite ready to wear your short shorts, try showing and little ankle flesh and going for a Capri or a turned up hem- this will allow a bit more breeze. Another trend is the “jumpsuit”—try strapless and in a solid color, but make sure it fits loosely. A Splash of Color Every season we get a new palette, and this time the hottest colors are whites, nudes, and beiges, which are all perfect for keeping cool, since they reflect the heat. Soft, chalk-like pastels are very in. Mix seashell or foamy whites with beiges and sandy shades. Purples and blues are also in, especially periwinkle, aqua and teal. Put away you LBD and bring out the LWD! This summer’s “ice cream colors” include whites, creams, beiges, peaches and light earth tones. If you strive to be a little more flashy, try turquoise or geranium. Tribal and ethnic prints are great for showing your summery side. Cool Kicks When your feet are hot, your whole body feels hot. Wear a pair of comfortable sandals made from real leather that allows your feet to breathe. Gladiator sandals are great for a more glamorous look. Allowing your tootsies to breathe is a sure fire way to keep cool. If you have to wear a closed-toe shoes while at the office, bring a pair or open-toed one in your bag for after-work drinks.
