Not too much

When it comes to accessorizing, how much is "too much"? ~ Perplexed

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

This is a good question! Lots of people think you can never have too many accessories. Wrong! You don't  want to overdo it and draw the attention away from you - which is what wearing too many different types of flashy accessories at once can do. Try and stick to one statement accessory and make it count. Keep the rest simple so you don't look like you are wearing too much. For example, if you're wearing earrings and a necklace, you don't also need to wear a brooch. Adorning every part of your body with necklaces, belts, bracelets, rings, earrings, bags, and anklets or toe rings can be a little distracting and will just make your look messy instead of well put together. H&M is full of accessories at amazing prices, so mix up your collection, but keep it focused on a day-to-day basis.

All about the silhouette

Will loose-fitting clothes make my body look wider than it is? ~ Hide-and-seek

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

A lot of people think this but it couldn’t be further than the truth. Loose-fitting clothing can actually be more flattering than tight-fitting clothing and make you look slimmer. Of course, it depends how loose you are talking about- you don't want to drown in your outfit! You should be able to pinch out a little fabric from the side of your clothes. Flowing and loose tops are very fashionable right now and can be accessorized with a cute belt on the hips, waist or under the bust, depending on what look you're going for. You should never wear anything that's too tight, as it will look like you're bursting out of your clothes, which will make you look bigger than you are. A great look this season is a loose flowing dress over a pair of tights, matched with a cute belt and long necklace.

Suit alternative

Girls always wear dresses at weddings and dances- but I want to wear a suit. Where can I get a flirty, girly one? ~ New Looker

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

You’re right, girls do tend to go for dresses at formal occasions, but there’s nothing wrong with being untraditional. Suits can be very flattering and, if the fit is right, you’ll outshine some of the dresses! Look for a style that nips in at the waist to show off your curves. Make sure the fit is just right in the shoulders- if its too big there, you’ll look wider than you are. For a great selection of colours, materials and style, visit Moiselle or Zara. You’ll find a feminine and flirty suit in no time.

Mix and match

How can I accessories outfits with a scarf? It seems awfully dull to just always wear it around my neck but I just love the print. ~ Scarfed

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

There are so many ways to wear a scarf, and a cute scarf is a must-have this season. Of course, you can just tie a scarf around your neck or wrap it around a few times but why not try letting it hang loose? This elongates the body, making you look taller. A pretty, patterned scarf also looks great tied onto your handbag or wrapped around one of the handles. Scarves make great belts, so just twist one and threat it through the loops in your jeans. If you have a smaller scarf, one of the newest looks is to wrap it around the ankle of your boot. A bright scarf is a perfect way to add colour to an otherwise plain or severe outfit.

Funky Disguise

What are fun ways to wear a hat this summer? I just had a disastrous haircut, so I was thinking this could be one way to improve things. ~ Hideaway

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Most people are incredibly picky about hats and have a tough time choosing one. But there are a few timeless styles that we keep seeing again and again. Fedoras and wide-brimmed hats protect you from the sun, and, of course, hide a bad haircut. Thanks to Burberry, the bucket hat is incredibly popular and looks super cute with almost any outfit. There are other ways to hide a bad haircut look for nifty headbands and hair accessories to take attention away from the hairstyle or tie your hair back in a ponytail. Just remember that no matter how awful your cut, a pretty smile is the best look. Try the Mong Kok Ladies Market, where there are hats everywhere.

Bit o’this, bit o’that

Right now, mixing and matching prints is considered really “fashion forward”. How can I pull off this look without looking like I got dressed in the dark? ~ Mixed up Miss

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Mixing prints is such a trendy and eclectic look. One of the coolest ways to mix prints is to choose stripes and florals; no matter what, it always looks trendy and fresh. The key to mixing patterns is to make sure they don’t compete. Once you’ve mastered stripes and florals, try matching different prints. A great place to check for all sorts of prints is Cheung Sha Wan road in Sham Shui Po. Outside the wholesale stores are loads of racks and baskets filled with garments for almost nothing!

Skimp Police

I know it’s hot, but some girls seem to be wearing less and less fabric. I was wondering how much is too much to expose and where to draw the line? ~ Underexposed

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Hong Kong is so hot and humid, wearing anything can make is feel a million times hotter. But there is no excuse for super-skimpy dressing. It’s hard to say what’s “too much” anymore, but generally if you are uncomfortable or wondering if an outfit is too revealing or attracting too much attention, you’re probably right. A useful rule: if you’re showing off one asset, cover up another. So if you’re wearing a really short skirt, wear something conservative on top, or vice versa. You should only draw attention to one area; otherwise you run the risk of showing off too much skin. If you do wear something “too revealing”, throw on a gauzy cardigan or vest. Local brand Maple is always full of amazing vests, cardigans and scarves at low prices. Just be sure to wear something made of feather-light material so you can cover up without overheating.

Shades of meaning

I’ve recently come across a new beauty term I don’t yet understand: what does it mean to have a “warm” or “cool” undertone to your skin? ~ Rainbow Brite

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Every skin colour has its own unique tone. Some skins are more “warm”, which means they have more red or yellow undertones and will suit warm or strong colours- people with these tones usually fall into categories referred to as “spring” or “autumn”. “Cool” skins have blue or green undertones and suit “icy” colours- they are “winters” or “summers”. For a private colour analysis, which will help you decided what colour clothes and makeup suit you, book a Colour Me Beautiful session at Savvy Style with SYP contributor Eve Roth Lindsay.

Bellydance chic

Harem pants are in style, but because of my small frame, I can't find a style that fits me. Is it true that short people can't pull these off? ~ Real petite

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Harem pants are such a good style for the summer. These ultra-comfortable pants are so popular, you can find them in almost every store. Just because you are petite it doesn't mean that you can't pull them off. Wearing harem pants really depends on how long your legs are and how confident you are. If you wear a top and shoes that are a similar tone to your harem pants, you will look taller. Harem pants come in soft jersey fabric in prints and solids. H & M has some great ones, and they're everywhere in Mong Kok's Argyle Centre. Add a pair of seriously high heels to make your legs even longer!

Bits and pieces

How can I accessorize a simple outfit like shorts and T-shirt to stand out in a crowd? ~Simplicity seeker

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

A T-shirt and shorts are the perfect summer outfit: low-key, comfortable and, most importantly, not too hot! You can always smarten up your look by wearing different types of tops instead of just a plain tee. A fancier top looks great at night, or a tank top can be layered with a vest for an edgier look. When wearing something casual, try to keep your accessories looking like you just threw the look together. Try ultra-long necklaces and chunky bangles, then throw a pair of this season’s embellished gladiator sandals, and you’ll have the perfect, effortless summer look. Check out Granville Road in TST for a wide choice.

Frock’n’ roll

Whats the best shape for dresses this year? I need something hot, but not too hot, and cute, but not too girlie for a party. ~ Summer dream

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

The summer means parties and time spent outdoors, so why not look for a dress that works from day to night?Grab summer’s hottest dress, the maxi, in this season’s “it” fabric, jersery. Look for something in a soft hue, like dove grey or a peachy pink. This look is sure to turn some heads while keeping you cool all summer. Finish the look off with some funky Lucite, or chunky plastic, bangles. Head over to Jardines’ Bazaar in Causeway Bay for and endless supply of cute summer dresses and accessories.

Shoulder On

I have always had a problem during summer: I never wear spaghetti-strap tops or anything that reveals my shoulders. I’ve always taken swimming lessons, so I have broad shoulders, and Im afraid showing them off will make me look like a man. But I get so hot. What can I wear to keep me cool and still look good?~ Broad broad

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Theres no need to keep your toned shoulder in hiding. The trick is to choose clothes that draw attention away from the areas you don’t like and highlighting those you do. In your case, choose V-shaped necklines, or halter tops which will lengthen your torso and make your shoulders look smaller at the same time. All the swimming have probably given you some beautiful sculpted shoulders which most people will envy! I say flaunt them in a cute halter top or dress, but if you really feel self conscious head to Maple (branches all over Hong Kong) and pick up a lightweight cardigan- perfect for covering up in the hot summer months.

Bigger is better

There are cute summer accessories everywhere, but I’m obsessed with the giant hair clips. What’s the best way to wear them? ~ In bloom

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Flowers, especially oversized ones, are hot this season. They add something special to a casual outfit, or a cute summery vibe to more formal outfits. There are many ways to wear a flower clip. Go bohemian and wear your hair down or wavy, then clip the flower just behind your ear. Another idea is to tie your hair up into a top know and secure the flower clip near the bun. Even if your hair is short, you can create a tiny ponytail and put your clip on it. You can also buy elastic hair bands with large flowers attached, either to wear around a ponytail or around your head. Experiment with different sized flowers and colour too. H&M always has flower accessories- but you can easily make your own. Head to Sham Shui Po and buy some fake flowers, hair clips and a hot glue gun to create one-of-a-kind flower fashion power.

As long as it's black

I have a sleeveless black cocktail dress, and am looking for a little black jacket to complement it. I've seen a lot of suit-style jackets, but I would prefer something smaller and less formal-looking, preferably embellished with sequins. Where can I find one for an affordable price? Also, do black dresses go best with black shoes, or are shoes of other colours okay as well? ~ Cocktail Queen

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Oh yes, the LBD! Everyone loves to own a Little Black Dress, but why does it have to have a black jacket over it? You can try a bit of colour. This season is all about colour, and adding a touch of colour will give you more mileage from your LBD. Instead of getting a black jacket, you could also look for an embellished cardigan to go out with the dress. A cardigan is great for throwing on over anything and look fabulous. If it is sequined or embellished it will liven up your dress and even look a bit more feminine than a jacket. A great place to look for an inexpensive cardigan is in the outlet shops on Tung Choi Street near Prince Edward.

New Look

I need a new look - I usually wear T-shirts and jeans. But I don't want to wear hot pants and vests like my friends. And how can I accessorise? Help! - New Look

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

There's no need to wear short shorts to look trendy this season, as slightly longer shorts are in vogue, perfect if you're nervous about showing too much leg. If you do stick to jeans, wear a slim, fitted tank and a waistcoat (with fringing if you're feeling funky) for a very "Spring 2010" look. Accessories finish any outfit, so throw on a chunky statement necklace and some bracelets. Head to Argyle Center (Mong Kok MTR exit D3) where hot pieces are available within weeks of runway shows at great prices.

Best foot forward

In the summer, my usual uniform is a crew-neck T-shirt, shorts and sandals. What sort of sandals are guaranteed to be comfortable and stylish? ~ Summer sole

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

I'm with you on the sandals - Hong Kong is way too hot to be in trainers all summer long. The hottest sandals this season are clog and wedge styles. While they have a little bit of a heel, they're very comfortable. If you're looking for a flat sandal alternative, the gladiator style is still in, and any kind of embellishment brings them slap up to date. These look great with shorts, but also jeans, skirts and dresses. Find a pair that is a little more dressy than flip flops, but not too over the top, so you can wear them with everything. One of the best places for shoe shopping is Granville Road in Tsim Sha Tsui every other shop seems to sell footwear.

Toes no-no

I'm allowed to wear casual clothes to school every day now. Sandals would be the easiest choice in summer, but open toed shoes aren't allowed for hygiene reasons and because they're a hazard in the science labs.  Flats are a no-no because they pinch my toes. What easy to slip on, closed-toe shoes - but not Crocs - can I get for daily wear? ~ Wrong-footed

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Neither Crocs - which were designed for wearing around the pool - nor heels are very sensible choices for a long day at school. You say flats pinch your toes, but I worry that perhaps you're just choosing style which don't suit your foot shape. For example, if you have wider feet than your friends, pointy shoes will pinch. Look for a round-toe flat such as a ballet slipper. They look amazing with skinny jeans, leggings, dresses or miniskirts. You might also want to try getting your shoe stretched at a shoe repair place before you wear them - sometimes hard leather can pinch your feet. A great place to find cheaper, fun shoes in all shapes, sizes and colours is Cotton On. They even have offers when you can buy two pairs for HK$99!

Don't sweat the small stuff

I'm turning 15 in a month, and while all my friends are 5"3 or taller, I'm just 5". I'm afraid i won't grown any taller, and that depress me. What (affordable) clothes will make me look taller? And where can I buy shoes to give me precious extra centimeters? Shops often don't sell heels or wedges in my size (33-35). ~ Reet petite

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Don't be depressed about your height many people have a growth spurt later in their teen years. And even if you don't, a lot of famous actresses are 5"3" or less! I'm only 4"11" so I know how you feel. If you want to appear taller, dress in similar tones from top to toe, and wear vertical lines- they draw the eye up and down. Wedge heels are clogs are the hottest shoe styles this summer: they're also very comfortable, easy to walk in, and make you look much taller. Finding small sizes can be difficult, but if you know what style of shoe you want, it might be a good idea to get a pair made. Try visiting www.dyos.hk (they also have a branch in Causeway Bay). They can make flats, heels, and even sandals designed to fit your feet perfectly.

Soldier styling

I'm a guy and I'm not very tall - about 167cm - but I love boots. I'd like to wear them with my jeans tucked in, but how can I work this outfit so I look taller? ~ Boots and all

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Military style is all the rage right now, so no matter how tall you are, boots will make you look super stylish. To appear taller, avoid anything that's too baggy or draws the eyes outwards, such as horizontal lines. Generally, the best way to look taller is to wear the same depth of colour from head to toe. For example, black boots and dark jeans will make your legs appear longer. If you're going to go with this combo, make sure to pair it with a dark jacket. You can also appear taller by matching your boots with a military jacket - plus the shoulder pads are a great way to add height. (this week's winner)

Get it bright

Red is a great colour but it makes me look too mature. I'm 16 - how can I wear it without looking old? ~ Lady in Red

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Wearing red is about attitude and attention. It's also my favourite colour. Red can symbolise power and ambition, but it can also remind us of love and warmth. It is important to choose the shade of red that looks best on you: decide if you look better in an orangey red, or a more true red, because when you wear the right shade, it definitely won't make you look "mature". To find your very best colours, ask a friend's opinion, or go to www.colourmebeautiful.hk to visit a Colour Consultant When wearing red, remember to keep the other pieces of your wardrobe less colourful. Try a cute dress: Cotton On (in Tsim Sha Tsui and Central) currently has tank dresses in a variety of styles and hues at an amazing price.

Right time, right place

I've seen a lot of hair bands around with peacock feathers on them are they only for parties, or do they work with casual outfits? ~ Banded

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Of course you can wear them with a casual outfit! Feathered, embroidered, and bejewelled accessories are going to stay in style for spring 2010. One of the best places to find feathered headbands is in Jardine's Bazaar in Causeway Bay: if you can imagine the colour and style, it'll be there. When choosing a headband, look for one that will work with your wardrobe and matches your outfits in some way. It might be the colour or the style. For example, if you're wearing something very feminine, make sure that whatever is in your hair is also girly. If you need more ideas about what's in fashion this season, pick up Kelly England's Guide to Life. They are free and available all over town or visit www.kellyengland.com. Comfy & Cute

What is the best way to wear a dolly dress and still look slim?

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Baby doll dresses are perfect for spring, as they’re lightweight and look cute.  This style is also great for hiding parts of your body you’re not so crazy about, while showing off your best assets!  If you don’t love your legs, wear a longer baby doll (to the knees); you could also pair it with a pair of leggings or even jeans.  A lot of girls wear this style of dress to hide a tummy; the best way to do this is by picking out a dress with an empire waist.  If you have an hourglass figure, throw a low-slung belt over your hips to create definition.  This style is super-cute on any figure, not to mention seriously comfortable!  You can find some adorable baby doll dresses in almost all of the shops at Argyle Centre in Mong Kok (MTR exit D2).

Terrifying Timing

With Valentine’s Day and Lunar New Year’s day falling on the same day, I am meeting my boyfriend’s parents – what should I wear?

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Meeting your other half’s parents is a pretty nerve-wrecking experience, so wear something comfortable- plan your outfit around a favourite piece of clothing.  While you want to look special for your Valentine, making a good first impression on his parents should be the main priority.  Try going for a look that’s demure, not sexy!  A favourite outfit of mine that just screams, “I’m super cute and sweet, love me!” is a camisole (no cleavage), with a cardigan, a knee-length skirt, and a pair of girly low heels or flats.  Keep it simple when it comes to makeup and jewellery, too much seems OTT.  Above all else, just be happy and be yourself, what you look like matters much less if they see you’re making their son happy! Head to Giordano for cute basics at reasonable prices.  If you’re looking for something a little funkier, Jardine’s Bazaar in Causeway Bay sells tons of adorable sweaters and cardigans…  plus you can also find a cute accessory or two!

January 24, 2010

Long story

A lot of magazines feature thigh-high bots for this season, but I’m only 160cm. Am I too short to wear them? If not, how can I pull them off?

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

I feel your pain! I’m also short, but it doesn’t keep me from wearing what I want. You just have to know how to wear it. The thigh-high boot can be difficult to pull off even for the tallest, savviest fashionista. The trick is to buy them in a colour that you can easily match to tights or leggings. This will make your legs appear much longer. Keep the rest of the outfit simple and you’ll have mastered one of this season’s trickiest trends. To find a pair of thigh highs at a great price, head to Sai Yeung Choi Street (South) starting from Dundas Street and walk towards Yau Ma Tei. The deals over there can be better than the shops and there’s no shortage of this season’s hottest boots.

The perfect pair

I have short hair and I love dangly earrings, but they never look right.

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Short hair is actually the most versatile for earring wearers, as it’s perfect for showing off everything from small posts to extravagant hoops. You need to consider your hairstyle and also what you’re wearing. If you’re wearing a funky outfit, match it with funky earrings. You can also choose earrings that flatter the shape of your face. If you have a long face, look for shorter earrings; if you have a shorter face, try a longer style. If your face is narrow, wear wider earrings; if you have a round face, go for a slimmer pair. In Causeway Bay, there are loads of shops selling a huge variety of earrings very cheaply. Remember to try earrings next to your face to see how they look before you buy.

Instant makeover

I want to wear a bob wig to a party, but I don’t want to spend too much. Where should I shop? - Chopped

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

Wigs are a great way to change your look on a temporary basis. Long hair can be a lot of fun, but it can be really cool to see what you’d look like with a shorter do without making a permanent change. Since most wigs are made just across the border on the mainland, Hong Kong is overrun with wig shops. Finding good quality, reasonably priced wigs can take a littlie bit of shopping around, through. One of the best and most convenient wig spots in Hong Kong is Pottinger Street. There are a couple of shops that sell bob-style wigs in every colour under the sun for HK$100-HK$150, depending on your negotiating skills.

Pin it on

Where can I find unique badges? I want to decorate my backpack. - Unique chic

Eve Roth Lindsay says:

What a great idea. Badges on your backpack – or even on your clothes – are a great way to express your own style. Badges are making something of a comeback, and there are all sorts available: some have cute or sassy sayings, some are just cool designs. But whatever you’re looking for, there’s bound to be something out there for you. One of the best places in Hong Kong to find anything craft-related is Sham Shui Po. On Ap Liu Street, you’ll be able to find a variety of crafty bits and bobs. If you’re interested in an even more serious DIY project, head over to Nam Cheong Street, where there’s no end to the ribbons, fabric, buttons, and other crafty oddities, so you can decorate to your heart’s content.
